If service users smoke in their bedsits. Consider a safer smoking policy to reduce the risk from fire.

  • Use correct ashtrays of suitable size that can not tip over.
  • Keep ashtrays doused with a little water.
  • Make sure you have enough ashtrays in order they do not over flow.
  • Do not leave a lit cigarette or pipe lying around.
  • Stub cigarettes out properly.
  • Make sure smoking materials are cold before emptying contents.
  • Only smoke legal cigarettes.
  • Educate service users never to empty ashtray contents into paper bins or bins with liners.
  • Educate service users that smoking in bed whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or if tired can have fatal consequences.
  • Educate service users not to cover detectors in order to smoke.
  • Landlords to consider flame retardant bedding or nightwear.
  • Keep matches and lighters away from children.
  • Never smoke if you are using oxygen
  • If you use paraffin based emollient creams, ask for non-flammable alternatives.

  •  The cigarette paper is designed to control the rate at which the cigarette burns.
  • Chemicals in the paper ensure the cigarette continues to burn and does not extinguish on its own.
